The Production Crew

The People Behind the Scenes

Master Yoda

Master Yoda uses a mysterious power he terms “The Force.”  Using this power, Yoda initiated the Confederation Theatre company in Calgary several years ago. Yoda uses “The Force” to enslave volunteers to help him in his quest to produce and direct more new plays. His new Padawan, Shamir Pantherstalker, states that Yoda frequently exclaims in seemingly quiet exasperation that, “Shamir, there is no try, there is only do or not do.” When directing, Yoda uses this “Force” on his cast, “You think Yoda stops directing, just because his actors do not want to hear? Always a director I am. Yoda directs like drunkards drink, like killers kill.”  Seemingly conjuring audiences out of thin air, Master Yoda declaims in convoluted grammar, “To the theatre you shall come.” And they do. Yoda now invokes “The Force” so that you tell your friends to come to our production of Opening Night too.

Dr. Alan LeBoeuf

Producer

What an apt title for our first production of the season.  It is an opening night in more ways than one. It means that we’re open for business again after eighteen months of hope and a few false starts. This play by Norm Foster epitomizes the trials and tribulations of Community Theatre and is a great way to get things rolling again. Of course, the disasters that befall the troupe in this play never happen to us.

…………  OK possibly the other guys.

“Laugh and the world laughs with you.” And you will laugh at this play. The final line of this poem says “Weep, and you weep alone.” The only tears you’ll see will be tears of laughter though.  Thanks to all the backstage folks who help in putting on the plays and special thanks to my Padawan, Shamir Ladhani, who is taking his first shot at producing. The cast and direction are excellent and we haven’t even paid them yet. Remember that getting Community Theatre back on the road is a joint effort. Now, can someone please tell me what the hell a Padawan is?

Shamir S. Ladhani

Producer

Shamir is thrilled to be co-producing Opening Night with Dr. Alan LeBoeuf - aka Master Yoda of The Theatrical Galaxy.  Shamir had agreed to co-produce the show because Yoda convinced him it was a wise choice and not a difficult job.

Shamir was heard telling Alan, “Fool me once .........”

He prefers performing to producing as it's the only time he gets to wear make-up and gets away with saying socially inappropriate things.  Shamir is a two-time award-winning stage actor and has performed for Storybook Theatre, Workshop Theatre, Morpheus Theatre, Dewdney Players, and Gas & Light.  He feels blessed to work with a top-notch director and highly talented cast as well as a very capable production crew in this season opener.

Karen Hanna

Stage Manager

Karen is a former teacher who has taught drama to elementary aged students, worked as story editor and background performer for several movies, been a judge for the Worldfest Houston Film Festival, and worked backstage in a variety of capacities for many dance productions. She is excited to accept the challenge of stage managing for Opening Night.

Lana Borrell

Props and Costumes

Lana can usually be found behind the scenes working on sets, props or stage crew. But she enjoys opportunities to perform whenever they arise. She is actively involved in a seniors acting group called "Acting our Age". She has performed in two of Gail Whiteford's murder mysteries here in Calgary: Funeral Tea (the slutty Gloria Dood) and The King's Feast  (the evil Queen Isadora) and in Gail's collection of shorter sketches in Seniors Behaving Badly. In her pre-Calgary life, Lana developed and implemented a high school drama program for her aboriginal students in Cumberland House, SK that resulted in the students winning first place at their regional drama festival three years in a row giving them the exciting opportunity to perform at the annual provincial drama festival in Regina.

Elayne Fischer

Assistant Stage Manager

Elayne has been involved in community theatre for over 10 years.  Countless productions have utilized her sewing skills over the years.  With this production of “Opening Night” along with Ungentlemanly Warfare, And Then the Lights Went Out, Evita, and Crimes of the Heart Elayne has pushed her limits and stepped out from behind the sewing machine and is adding a new set of skills at her disposal.  As a dedicated Assistant Stage Manager, she has had the opportunity to engage with the production process in a whole new way.  She has enjoyed and loved the experience of working on “Opening Night” with such an incredible cast and crew.  Elayne hopes you all enjoy the show as much as she has enjoyed being a part of it.

John Hickie

Sound Design & Effects, Photography and Program

John has been involved in all of Confederation’s productions to date. He has produced, stage managed, built props, taken photos, initiated Eventbrite ticketing, drove big trucks and most of all lifted heavy shit onto those trucks. On stage he’s used his voice to howl like a sled dog and simulate a World War I fighter plane, but has never actually said a word. His real passion in theatre is sound design and manufacturing unique sound effects, both electronic and live for radio plays.  With Paul Brown, John co-authored Shackleton – The Radio Play which was produced in 2018.

Trevor Somers

Lighting & Sound

Trevor is well known in Calgary’s Community Theatre community.  His technical mastery of the Pumphouse’s sophisticated lighting system results in his constant demand to work in the booth with the Stage Manager and Sound Operator. In addition to his prowess with the lighting system, he also works wonders programming complicated sets of musical cues and sound effects into the QLAB theatre management system. Trevor has won awards at the Calgary ACTS Awards for his volunteer spirit and technical expertise. Trevor has worked on all of Confederation’s productions over the years.

In addition to work in the theatre, Trevor enjoys going to Boston Pizza up the hill with Alan and John.

Lorne Drabinsky

Front of House Manager

Lorne has been around the theatre scene in Calgary for over 50 years! He has managed the Front of House for numerous theatre groups including Beth Israel Players, Workshop Theatre and now Confederation Theatre Society. He has always enjoyed making sure the audience is well taken care of before, during and after each performance. Lorne is thrilled to be 'back in business' managing the Front of House for our 2021-2022 Theatre season opener, "Opening Night”, after our long 18-month break. You will see him at the door. Enjoy the show!

Terry Ager

Confederation Theatre Society Board Member

After retiring many years ago I decided to return to a life long passion for theatre. Of course I wondered if age would present a barrier to being involved. I did not need to be worried. Fortunately I gathered up  my courage and auditioned for Confederation's first play and got a part. What a joy! Since then I have acted steadily with "acting Our Age", a special part of Confederation that entertains at senior groups and Retirement Residences in the city and surrounding areas. I am enjoying my life so much and encourage anyone of any age to join our fabulous group for a fun experience.. I have such a great new group of friends because of my involvement with this group. In the past I have acted, directed, produced (badly), painted sets, and done costume design so you can see there are many areas you could be involved with and many more behind the scenes projects where your skillset would be welcomed.
